Android One - A Platform for Ultra-Cheap Smartphones

In this year's Google I/O 2014, Google has announced Android One. Android One is a design reference platform which will allow the manufacturers to build ultra cheap smartphones.Android One provides the tailored-made feature set for the smartphones.

Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President at Google and Head of Android Platform, announced on the first day of the Google I/O 2014 that the company is willing to work with the manufactures to capture low range smartphone market.

The first smartphone under the Android One Platform comes from Micromax, second most popular smartphone brand in India.Other than Micromax, Google has roped in Karbon and Spice as their inital partners.

With this alliance, it is clear that Google wants to capture the Indian smartphone market which is famous for the low range devices.Like what Motorola did with the success of Moto G and Moto E, Google also wants to get the similar success.

This Android One smartphones will provide feature like FM Radio, Dual SIM support, microSD card and a low price.

Goolge wants to keep the price till $100 ( Rs6000 in Indian Currency) , these smartphones will be stock Android but it could include some custom apps by the manufacturers. Google wants to provide the Stock Android experience with Android One without diminishing the Android experience like Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG etc at low price.


Microsoft on the other hand is also trying to capture the Low range Indian market with the help of Micromax by launching windows phone powered by Windows 8.1 in the range of Rs.6000-10000. To tackle the Microsoft this move by Google can be considered as vital one considering the buzz for Android phones in the Indian market.
