Moto E | Much Bigger and Faster, also gets a front camera

Moto E, its 1st gen variant is still ruling the entry-level smartphone market in India since its launch last year! Now Motorola has announced its 2nd Gen like Moto G and Moto X, which came out last year.

Motorola knows how to lure its customers. Last year, though on a surprise note, Motorola launched Moto E to tackle low-budget smartphone market in developing countries like India and Brazil keeping the lowest possible price of Rs.6999/-. And now, in the beginning of this month only, Flipkart, Motorola's exclusive retail partner in India, slashed down price further to Rs.5000/- hinting at the next gen release of Moto E.

Although Motorola did not make much buzz while launching this next gen variant, but we are quite sure that this new feature loaded variant will definitely make noise once again in the Indian market.

Well, lets get a quick view at what we are getting in this 2nd Gen variant!

Moto E 2nd Gen - comes with 5MP rear camera and also a front-camera, bigger 4.5" display

Design

This phone is bigger than its predecessor measuring 129.9 x 66.8 x 12.3 mm while predecessor measures at 124.8 x 64.8 x 12.3 mm, thus slightly heavier.
Though Motorola kept the design of this phone much similar to the 1st gen variant, but there is one noticeable change. Motorola has deprecated its two-front facing speakers to just one, they have removed the bottom one.

Display

Motorola quite surprised and disappointed at the same time here. The new variant is now a little bigger than its predecessor, it sports 4.5 inch screen now (1st gen has 4.3 inch screen) which is a plus point for this device. But, here is the disappointment, though they have increased the screen size of this phone they haven't improved the screen resolution, it has same old qHD 540x960 pixels resolution and 245 ppi (pixel per inch) compared to 265 ppi pixel density of the Moto E 1st Gen. Which means, reduced sharpness with larger display.

Platform

While Motorola is still working on rolling out Android Lollipop 5.0 upgrade to its 1st Gen phone, this new variant comes with the latest, almost Stock, Android Lollipop 5.0 with little Motorola tweaks. Means sweater and smoother experience.

In order to get Lollipop animations to work buttery smooth, you need to have a better processor. Motorola doesn't disappoint here. This version of Moto E gets a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410  quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. But it is packed with same 1GB RAM from 1st Gen.

Storage

Motorola doubled the internal storage capacity of this device and now it sports 8GB internal storage space. Also there is an option of expanding storage using Micro-SD card, which supports storage upto 32GB.

Camera

Though being popular, many criticized for the lack of front camera. Motorola tried to fix that issue this time and has got a front camera on the top-right side of the phone. But don't get excited, it's a VGA camera!

But here things get interesting when we look at the rear camera. Although company retained the same 5MP camera at the back, they have improved few features of it. It has now got a much needed 'auto-focus'. Also they have managed to include some features from its high end devices, such as a double twist opens up the camera app, which is seen in the Moto X.

Battery & Connectivity

2nd Gen phone comes with an impressive 2390mAh battery, which is really an improvement over its predecessor which sport just 1920mAh battery. But considering the OS it is going to work on, this is the much needed improvement.

1st Gen phone was an entry-level phone, and thus Motorola kept things simple. 1st Gen phones came out with no LTE support. But now Motorola has successfully upgraded this feature in the 2nd gen phones. 2nd Gen phones will come out supporting  4G LTE.

The unlocked version of Moto E 2nd Gen 3G model will cost $119.99, which means Rs.7430. And the 4G LTE variant will $149.99, approximately Rs.9288. Considering the features and the price tag, Motorola is again the winner of entry-level smartphone market.
